Lock rekeying questions

What does rekeying actually mean?

We open the lock cylinder and swap the internal pins to a different combination, then cut you a key that matches the new arrangement. The lock stays on your door and keeps working exactly as before — but every key made for the old pin configuration stops turning it. It is a mechanical change inside the lock, not a replacement of it.

Is rekeying cheaper than replacing my locks?

Considerably, in most cases. You are paying for labour and a handful of small pins rather than new hardware for every door. On a house with four or five exterior locks the difference is substantial. Replacement only becomes the better value when the existing hardware is worn out, the finish has failed, or you actively want to upgrade to a higher grade of deadbolt.

Can you make all my doors open with one key?

Yes — that is called keying alike, and it is one of the most satisfying jobs we do. Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most standard residential brands can. A few cannot be practically rekeyed — some very cheap builder-grade locks, certain proprietary systems, and cylinders that are worn to the point of unreliability. A tenant moved out. Do I have to rekey between every tenant?
